Developed in collaboration with Mr J Miller FRCS, Mayday Hospital Croydon, England. A knee arthrodesis may be undertaken as a salvage procedure for an infected or loose total knee replacement in an elderly patient with poor bone stock.
However, attaining an arthrodesis can be a problem. After removal of the infected prosthesis the knee may be immobilised with a plaster cast or an external fixator but the best results have been wiih intra-medullary fixation using a long nail.
Mayday Nail Indications
The Mayday arthrodesis nail has so far been supplied on a custom made basis only. The device is a two part intra-medullary nail designed for arthrodesis of the knee, where both components are introduced via the knee joint and finally joined by a locking pin. Each nail segment may be fixed in the respective medullary canals by means of cross locking screws. Additional fixation may be achieved by hydroxyapatite coating or possibly by the use of bone cement.
All that we require are AP and lateral x-ray films (preferably scaled), showing at least half of the femur and tibia. We will do the rest.
